Pay per click or SEO?

This is a question that we get asked quite regularly, should I focus on SEO or should I spend my money on Adwords.

From my perspective, I would suggest initially using Adwords for a month or so before focusing on any SEO. Depending on the results that you get you can then decide on whether you keep your Adwords running indefinitely or whether you focus all of your efforts on SEO.

My thinking in all of this is that Adwords is a great way to determine the actual keywords that your visitors are using to find your website and gives you some great ammunition for targeting your SEO.

What criteria would you use in determining whether to go ahead with Adwords? Thanks Ruby

I would look at the profitability of the campaign, ie, the ROI. How much do you have to spend on the adwords versus how much profit they generate. If you are getting a decent ROI on your adwords spend then why not keep them running indefinitely.

I've heard that running adwords can also help your SEO campaign. What do you think?

If you have a relatively new website then running adwords can definitely let Google know that you are serious about your marketing.

Thanks Neil, that makes sense. I guess it could be an idea to run a small adwords campaign when you launch a new website.

Nothing is certain as Google doesn't give out it's formula however if I was launching a new business I would definitely run an adwords campaign for the first few weeks/months.
